News that Oli Jones had signed up to the Damian Lazarus helmed label for his third studio LP probably came as a shock to many, but really it fits in well with the development in sound of Skream these past few years. Whilst full details of that LP are yet to surface, Crosstown lay down a marker of how it might sound with this Still Lemonade 12" from Skream. There are few producers who have as diverse a back catalogue as John Tejada. Parabolas, his debut full-length for German imprint Kompakt and his ninth album in total, is the first album, however, to rein in the genre-hopping to concentrate on simply making a collection of quality tech house instrumentals. At times coming across as a love letter to Detroit, the slick beats and synthesized emotion of intro "Farther and Fainter" and "The Living Night" could be a long lost B-sides on Planet E. Before becoming repetitive, though, he turns to Sheffield for "Subdivided," which is underpinned by luscious otherworldly melodies almost Autechre-like in their construction.

At certain points Parabolas threatens to be more fill than thrill; "Timeless Space" and "The Mess and the Magic," meander on pleasantly without achieving much; at first the beats trudge and the basslines labour. But Tejada's mastery soon becomes apparent, as he tears the techno murk apart with riffs of sheer joy. It's an unexpected turn to each tune, but it's also something that's to be expected from this veteran. He knows just as well as you do when things are starting to lag. Indeed, he probably knows better. Whereas Tejada's previous dance floor-orientated albums may have had a tendency to come across as a collection of tracks presented as an album rather than a long playing concern that actually flows, Parabolas is the opposite. One interesting thing about consistency is that it's not achieved by doing the same thing over and over again, but by doing something that's different enough each time, and doing it well. Gabriel Ananda's a prime example, and this third release on his and Marcel Janovsky's Basmati label is varied and creative. "Trixini" opens with wonky, off-kilter folds of dissonance, then drops into a smooth, submerged soup and builds back up, reintroducing the earlier acidic squawks. The structure seems to tell a story, evolving into different sections easily and interestingly. "Hyperballet," in contrast, has deliriously innocent shrieks, then sweet, glowing pastel whistles and plinks; quirky, storytime stuff which would work alongside tracks from his hometown's Kompakt label.

"Charming and Alarming" comes on a bit stronger, and the solid funkiness in the rhythm is complemented as usual by a roughshod aesthetic that makes all the difference. A demented barrel organ and screwloose bloops take turns and then come together near the end. It's not serious music, but it's done with serious attention to detail, form and musicality. The structures of these tunes are all somewhat unexpected, but make complete sense. "Bezwei," meanwhile, is almost totally serious, rolling, tough and eminently clubbable with dreamy, quietly epic pads and wonky melodic percussion which suggests simple melancholy. Amid the usual suspects on Circus Company's Snuggle & Slap were a few label newbies. Chief among them were the Ruhr Valley's Homewreckers, a trio that announced themselves with the silky smooth lament "Chicago Urban Blues." The version on S & S was "live at Café Bohemia." The one on their debut single for Circus Company isn't. No matter: The rolling bassline is buffeted by what sounds like a live bass and sweet chords. With merely a sturdy beat and a delicate vocal added in otherwise, there's not much to "Blues" to speak of, but as with Joy Division (which this track's backing recalls in a strange way), minimalism is exactly the reason it has so much power.

A-side "Not My Business" would be similarly powerful, but the monologue detailing music industry shenanigans will take you immediately out of the moment. It's done by the three minute mark, leaving more than six minutes unmolested, but it's hard not to have been caught in the middle of what amounts to a few minutes of inside baseball talk about the biz. Good information, powerful topic, but unlike DJ Sprinkles, it seems too dance floor-driven to make it worthwhile for home listening, and too complex for clubbers to engage with on the dance floor. That's, of course, thinking that they want people to engage with it at all. For dancing purposes, it's highly recommended. From the lazer flares to the not-quite congo house meets Funky tabla riddim, by way of the '90s kid's fruit juice-referencing title, Julio Bashmore's "Um Bongo's Revenge" wears its British heart on its gravy-stained sleeve. More than that though, the release marks a seminal moment of sorts: It's the first major Funky release on a traditional house and techno label.

Dirtybird has made its name with a barmy, Bay Area brand of tech house, but Claude VonStroke's A&R ear clearly extends much further, as UK Funky arriviste Bashmore's debut rips that template to shreds, not so much desecrating past glories, but pointing the way toward richer, more innovative sonic pastures. "Um Bongo's Revenge" is without a doubt the standout track here, and seems almost to have anthem status written into its molecular structure, but its success should remind how useful such generic/scenic miscegenation can be. The oft-repeated "Um Bongo" refrain should be annoying, but isn't. The various illogical breakdowns, usually the hallmark of a producer with either ADD or a severe lack of discipline, should grate, but somehow arrive like manna from heaven, while the lazers and sirens fuse organically with the track's more Teutonic elements.

"World Peace" cannot help but come up short in comparison, a whirling organ ride that sets its cross hairs more intently on Berlin than London, replete with Rhodes and tambourine tropes. Nonetheless, with San Francisco, London and Berlin all in the mix on this EP, you get the sense that this globalisation thing might just work...www.residentadvisor.net

After building a stellar reputation as probably the hottest female tech-house DJ in London, it only seemed natural that Anthea should move on to crafting groove and melodies to rival the many artists that she’s supported over the years, albeit with a bit of assistance and knob-twiddling from fellow Londoner Celler.

With a solid bump and groove adorning every track on the EP, and an injection of the twisted ethnic-house vibe that saturated her recent Ibiza Voice podcast, Anthea and Cellar have crafted an impressive collection of future-house gems that should act as a lesson to some of the more seasoned house producers in how to sculpt a truly original release.

Opener "Caedmon Loop" is built upon a tropical melody of minute twinkling strings that are only unleashed after an extended percussion intro sets the foundations for the deep-as-you-like-it bass to hammer home the rhythms. Cut from a similar cloth is the island party hit "Congata," sure to get daytime boat parties bouncing from Ibiza to the South Pacific and well beyond this season.

Building on these ideas rather than imitating them is the equally deep "I Change," all chattering high-hats and a delayed soulful holler that nods back to the early days of Chicago house, that beautifully caps the vinyl release. Those still fixated with their 12-inches however, risk missing out on the delights of digital closer "House Nation." As filtered lasers collide with dubby Miami-esque beats and choppy pan-lid hits, the familiar distant vocals return adding a sensual tinge to proceedings, giving those wielding CDs and laptops an extra weapon from this armory of superb tracks...www.residentadvisor.net
