After more than a year in the making, nrk have announced seth troxler has mixed the next edition of the label’s in the lab series. due for release in october, it’s the detroit dandy’s second official mix cd following on from his boogybytes effort in february 2010. this time, though, the visionquest man has been allowed to stretch his legs over two cds.

he says… "my interpretation of the concept behind the lab series was to present ideas like a scientist working in some secret base off the cost of myanmar.... when night talk with spider monkeys has just gone too far, what do you do, whatʼs there left to do? i recorded this mix live using just decks and mixer (no ableton) in my friendʼs bedroom, which for many djs is their very own domestic lab. “

“disc one for me is somewhat of a straightforward mix of contemporary and classic house, a summary of my style, a little clip from this point in time, what iʼm know for and how i tend to present ideas when iʼm touring. for disc two i really wanted to showcase my interest in the wider landscape of electronic music outside of what i do in a club. i think this mix embodies that idea, not ableton-perfect, a little rough around the edges but interesting and human.."

having had a sneak preview i can tell you it’s worth getting excited about.... drifting through styles with purpose and groove, it smoothly swells and churns, builds and drops with a lively charisma. the second disc is more un-hinged and takes in intricate, broody sounds, otherworldly samples and weaves a tight, hypnotic thread from start to finish.

The return of Levon Vincent!!! It's over 18 months since he dropped the masterful 'Double Jointed Sex Freak', and aside from a couple of low key remixes on Moodmusic and UQ we've been left starving for new material. As expected, his production is super right and tight, built for soundsystems capable of handling his signature bass weight and those massive kicks. Spanning the A-side 'Man Or Mistress' haughtily minces up to a teasing square bass before stealthily unleashing an almighty synthline for macho movers and the ambiguous Adonis inside you. By the track's end it's pure tops-off time. Flip him over and 'Making Headway' serves a non-too-subtle arrangement of panting, barking noises over thrusting subs with that wide-style New York spaciousness, and finally 'No Regrets' deploys sweetly forlorn vocal licks on a more warped kicker for the midday dancing crew. Sophisticated Hi-Tech House music from Recloose. With the refresh of recent reissue for comparison, Recloose is right up-to-the-time with his chops on these three tracks. On the A-side's 'Electric Sunshine' the triplet drums, guitar licks and woozy, sun-baked synths are rendered with an incredible clarity and spaciousness, but this guy has the rare quality of stunning musicianship to add to his production values. On a more upbeat tip, 'Parquet' shakes out a dynamically jazzy and Teched-out House killer, and flipside 'Tecumseh' rides the groove Detroit style, like a dirtier, meaner Shake. The ever-reliable Kassem Mosse impresses with three tracks for Italy's Kinda Soul Recordings - home to releases from Jus-Ed, Scott Ferguson and Rick Wade. It's hard to pick a highlight from these sublime efforts. A-side '2D' would be the obvious choice with its plaintively captivating lead synth and engrossing arrangements imbued with the same addictive qualities as his Workshop 08 12" or 'Aqueous Haze' 12", but then you encounter the snapping Deep House/Electro groove of 'Thalassocalyce' embroidered with the most gorgeous Detroit motifs, and the killer slo-mo echoic throb of 'Demo Drums Ripping Demos'. Alexander Omar Smith comes hard with three tracks of rugged acid for FXHE. These are essentially three variations on a tracky and hypnotic vibe ellicited from what sounds like a 606, 303 and some of that cryptic lo-fi magic he keeps in the top drawer. It's not really Chicago acid either, these tracks sound more like 'Sheet One' era Plastikman than owt from DJ Pierre and co, eschewing warm and groovy feelings for a tough driving Detroit style salted with Omar's processing methods for that dry rasping snap. We should say that we've got a real soft spot for Oliverwho Factory and their remix of 'Rarified' neatly satisfies our craving for off-kilter narcotic Detroit house with that late-in-the-day feeling. Meanwhile, Tama Sumo & Prosumer's original mix takes a more refined and slinky route to the centre of the floor and the fantastic 'Flow Figure' summons the ghosts of old Boo Williams with odd metalic sound sphere and a ruff-but-sexy rhythm snag. Levon Vincent returns with another absolutely deadly blend of rugged House structures and classic dub washes for this latest twelve on his own Novel Sound imprint. There really is very little House music of this calibre around at the moment, the title track here somehow managing to evoke the spirit of Mike Huckaby, Kassem Mosse and Marcel Dettmann without really sounding like any of them, weaving tight percussive flourishes in and out of the mix alongside organic noises that imbue proceedings with a heady, narcotic character. Over on the flipside, "A Melody for Everyone" opens up the House templates for a more shimmering session along the lines of classic KDJ meets Omar S, with a colossal synth hook turning the heat up before closing track "I Owe You Everything" makes use of densely squashed toms and a vocoded vocal for a closer that takes in a vast array of classic House signatures without really sounding like anything you'll have heard before. Needless to say, massive twelve.

This ‘fidget house’ (his flippant definition) classic has got the best appropriation of a track by a blind, homeless street musician that dressed like Thor since Mr Scruff (‘Night At The Dogs’ ravages Moondog’s ‘Lament’). Where Jesse has certainly not forgotten his club roots, he’s also shown his skills as a producer of songs with ‘Miss Taker’ featuring rising star David E Sugar. And if that isn’t enough Hot Chip are back on their best “C-A-S-I-O P-O-K-E” form, this time spelling out “R-O-S-E” over and over on dub funk single ‘Forget My Name’, making two appearances overall for that all-important celeb endorsement..www.lafriendly.com

The Munich based DJ - also well-known for his releases on Karmarouge - launches a firework of sudorific bass whirls, groovy percussions and culminating breaks. But he never forgets about emotions and melodies. Max wants to see the people dancing and we believe we have to support him on his way by releasing this great EP.
