Pearson Sound ‎– Pearson Sound

01 Asphalt Sparkle
02 Glass Eye
03 Gristle
04 Crank Call
05 Swill
06 Six Congas
07 Headless
08 Russet
09 Rubber Tree

David Kennedy, the Leeds producer behind Pearson Sound, has been at the vanguard of British electronic music since his first singles (under another alias, Ramadanman) back in 2006. He's had a productive and popular career to date, a dozen singles credited to Pearson Sound and another dozen as Ramadanman, and he even bested the likes of James Blake and Actress in a 2010 list at Little White Earbuds. But it's nearly a decade into his music career, and only now is Kennedy settling on his first full-length album.

For those who've followed Kennedy's work, "settling" hasn't been his specialty; he's a restless character. He came up as a dubstep producer alongside Mala, Coki and Burial, but before long began to embrace the rumbles of bass emanating beyond South London — most notably the sound of Chicago footwork. Kennedy's 2011 Fabriclive mix (credited to both Ramadanman and Pearson Sound) doubled as an overview of bass music in the new decade, ranging from dubstep escapees Burial, Pinch and Mala to the tech-house of Julio Bashmore and darker techno tones of Levon Vincent. A recent single, "Raindrops," was iridescent and ambient.

But for his debut, there's a sense of patience to Pearson Sound's productions; of not rushing toward the next new thing, but instead carefully considering each and every sound, be it thunderous or minute. (Listen to "Asphalt Sparkle" without the right speaker set-up, though, and the earth-moving bass might sound downright slight.) Pearson gets a tone so deep and resonant that it's like a seismic event beneath the otherwise anthemic synth chords, making the entire track wobble like Jello. "Crank Call" literally vibrates, but with smaller sounds, the way a phone might buzz across a tabletop. Listen more closely, and beneath the hi-hats and ghostly pads, there's more ringing, as well as a heavy breather at the other end of the line.

No matter the tempo, Pearson Sound thrills. "Glass Eye" slots into the modern bass canon, its rumbling hits offset by splashes of cymbals, tricky drum programming and snares that wobble like spinning plates. But Kennedy is just as effective making dark, stomach-churning ambient sounds, the way he does in "Gristle." The exotic hand percussion of "Six Congas" sounds at once bright and body-moving, but with a foreboding undercurrent. In spite of its title, the beat of "Rubber Tree" emits sparks like metal against metal before sliding into feedback. It's a noisy yet masterful end to a debut nearly a decade in the making...  www.npr.org

Hodge & Facta - Spheres of Costa Rica / Visions

01 Spheres of Costa Rica
02 Visions

Tempa goes Bristolian with two lean and slinky riddims from Hodge & Facta. Both arrive at this 12" off the back of their strongest work, Hodge with the 'Mind Games' for Hotline and 'Amor Fati' for Dnuos Ytivil, and Facta on the 'Loveless' 12" for Idle Hands. Here, with 'Spheres Of Costa' they find a super-cooled balance of noirish chimes and humid, playfully tropical percussion for the early swingers, whereas 'Visions' is blatantly dark and moody, all Brizzle bass shifts and spiny drums worked for the 130bpm crew... www.boomkat.com

Bruce - Just Getting Started / Tilikum

A1 Just Getting Started
B1 Tilikum

True to the usual bullshit-averse attitude of his Livity Sound imprint, Peverelist is keeping background details on the producer behind this EP to a minimum. We know that this outing, for Livity Sound's sister label Dnuos Ytivil, is Bruce's debut, and that he has another coming up on Hessle Audio. Aside from that, there's an obvious desire to let the tunes do the talking here. That's fine though, because, as is generally the case with Livity and Livity-associated releases, the tunes are excellent.

"Just Getting Started" has a slightly less manic but similarly intense percussive spine as Hodge used on Dnuos Ytivil's last release, the excellent Amor Fati. A riotous hail of bass drums, toms and splintering snares, it adds various industrial wheezes and distorted screams along the way to produce a slice of rough, grainy techno. "Tilikum" has a slightly more stretched-out but no less vital feel. A bleak and restless beast, it only occasionally breaks its central emphasis on slowly thumping bass with freakout synth digressions and dense, foggy howls... www.residentadvisor.net

Bambounou - Centrum

01 Where
02 Composer
03 Fire Woman
04 Excluding Natalia
05 S.A.C.
06 Each Other
07 Oez
08 At The Mirror
09 0 To 1

Jéremy Guindo-Zegiestowski has been a bit of a Renaissance man figure in Paris's ever-bustling dance music scene. His early work signalled an allegiance to the more UK-style, bass-heavy side of things—which earned him a regular spot in the 50WEAPONS roster starting in 2012. More recently, however, he's been moving towards house, especially with his growing role in the ClekClekBoom crew.

50 Weapons will issue Centrum just as it handled the release of his debut album, Orbiting. Where that one was based around an idea of future life beyond earth, Centrum takes the focus back to our home planet, with a dystopian vision the press release describes as "a future where everything is in order and where no one can get out of the system." The label also states that the album takes more of a page from "ambient and techno" than the "bass and footwork influences" of the first LP... www.residentadvisor.net

Lando Kal / Stillcold Mysteres - Rhythm (Version) / Opinwide

01. Lando Kal - Rhythm (Version)
02. Stillcold Mysteres - Opinwide

Fresh from wrecking us with that Electroid monster for Rush Hour, Lando Kal slices up 'Rhythm Of The Night' on a wicked 808 tip for Stillcold. The first in their white label series features the Lazer Sword dude ripping the main motif over cracked woodblocks and busy bass hits somewhere between Girl Unit-style Hip Hop rave and juke muzik, strictly for the dance. Flipside Stillcold's Mystéres project debuts with an iced fusion of hypercolour boogie swing and throbbing Techno, and most importantly, it works. Mastered at Berlin's D&M for optimal impact...www.boomkat.com

Kuedo - Videowave EP

01. Take Off (Remix)
02. Starfox (Illum Sphere's Re-fox)
03. Glow (Clark Remix)
04. Shutter Light Girl (Heterotic Remix)
05. Oh

'Videowave' marks the conclusion of phase 1 in Kuedo's oeuvre. Backed with remixes from Illum Sphere, Clark and Heterotic, he presents two brilliant new tracks conceived and executed between 2009 and 2011. His 'Take Off Remix' was (air)borne as a remix of a Slugabed track, but the original schematics were so far from the original that's it ended up here, and its techy arpeggios contrast quite sharply with his other new track 'Oh', whose flighty slowfast programming and sweeter melody almost feel like they're from a different artist. On the remix tip, Illum Sphere offers a symphonic rework of 'Starfox' full of cascading synths and bulbous bass shapes, while Clark redraws 'Glow' in a staggeringly vast 3D sphere and Heterotic takes 'Shutter Light Girl' for a beautifully romantic 808 trip...www.boomkat.com

Gemmy - Too Far / Da Dodgems

1. Too Far
2. Da Dodgems

Future-fresh Dubstep-Boogie weight from one of Bristol's most colourful producers. The one to check is obviously the massive 'Da Dodgems', finding a sweet spot between jerkin', late '90s Timbaland-style R&B and rolling Dubstep-Boogie like few others we could think of. The flipside 'Too far' is a cool and kinda unusual piece of halfstep funk, but trust us, you simply need this for the B-side!...www.boomkat.com

Zed Bias - Biasonic Hotsauce: Birth Of The Nanocloud

01. Birth Of The Nanocloud Scene 1
02. Yagga feat. Serocee
03. Do It feat. Dynamite MC
04. Phoneline feat. Rosco Trim
05. Fairplay feat. Jenna G
06. Koolade feat. Toddla T & MdCL
07. Birth Of The Nanocloud Scene 2
08. Trouble In The Streets feat. Mark Pritchard
09. Neighbourhood feat. MC Rumpus & Micky Prince
10. Birth Of The Nanocloud Scene 3
11. Koolnahman feat. Specialist Moss
12. Lucid Dreams feat. Falty DL
13. Night Lovers feat. Sam Frank
14. Salsa Funk
15. Badness feat. Skream
16. All Out feat. Mighty Moe
17. Birth Of The Nanocloud Scene 4
18. Sinner

A guest-heavy new album from the UK Bass music pioneer. The names on show read like a mega-rave line-up from all corners of the modern Bass spectrum, and the sound is equally diverse, yet dripping with crucial Biasonic flavour. Highlights have to be the massive 'Trouble In The Streets' with the man-of-too-many-names-to-mention, Mark Pritchard (ok, well Africa HiTech for a start); the tidy update of his 'Neighbourhood' classic now with vox from MC Rumpus and Micky Prince; a sterling moment with Falty DL on the dainty but rude skip of 'Lucid Dreams'; the Hi-tech Latin mechanics of 'Salsa Funk'; and the rudee ragga-House of 'Phoneline'. It's all tied up with some mad-scientist concept narrative which is a bit daft, but kinda works well for an end-to-end listen...www.boomkat.com

Dro Carey - Candy Red

1. Candy Red
2. Hungry Horse

Deeply tripped and deadly Avant-Dance music from compelling anomaly, Dro Carey. Since dropping one of last years most un-categorisable and weirdly thrilling 12"s, the 'Venus Knock' EP for Trilogy Tapes, he's been relatively quiet, and it's kinda understandable because most labels are just way too conservative to deal with this amount of madness. So, huge kudos to Ikonika's Hum & Buzz label, for whose forward aesthetic really suits the rhizomatic futurism of this record. His A-side 'Candy Red' is a proper outsider take on Footwork, 808 Bass music, '90s R&B and fractal electronics, hyper-streamed through a Youtube'd and Tumblr'd mind to sound like a total trip. Flipside 'Hungry Horse' is also produced from a uniquely forward perspective, visually evocative of ultra-modernist, sharply contoured architecture, and built from brittle fragments of pointillist Juke percussion, glass-curtain synth pads and rapid-fire R&B vocal patterns, all arranged in blocks like some impossibly unstable lego superstructure. We've waffled too long, just cop it and freak the heck out! Strongly recommended for the futurists!...www.boomkat.com

Martyn - Ghost People

01. Love And Machines feat. Spaceape
02. Viper
03. Masks
04. Distortions
05. Popgun
06. I Saw You At Tule Lake
07. Ghost People
08. Twice As
09. Bauplan
10. Horror Vacui
11. We Are You In The Future

According to Martyn himself, it's a less intimate affair than his first LP, Great Lengths, which he describes as "very personal."

"A lot of the music and the themes behind [Great Lengths] were taken out of my daily life: my sorrows and my melancholy," he says. "For this album, I chose things that are further away from me: the Ghost People theme. There are references to DJing in general. Not the jet-set DJ life, but the old Paradise Garage DJ life, where people want to share and play the music they really love, regardless of if it's trendy. Nothing fancy or flashy. Just back to the roots."

Stylistically, the album continues on the same tack as Martyn's past releases, weaving between dubstep, funky, house and techno. It shows him teaming up once again with Erosie, the go-to visual artist for Martyn's label, 3024 (not to mention RA's recent X party in Sao Paulo). In addition to the cover art, Erosie has devised visuals to accompany Martyn's upcoming live sets, dates for which have yet to be confirmed...www.residentadvisor.net

Nautiluss & Lord Skywave - Ultraviolet / Blue Monday

01. Ultraviolet
02. Bleu Monday

New collaboration between Canadian producer Nautiluss and Lord Skywave aka the singer from Simian. The label seems to be heading for Chris Martin's BASS Music shelf again with 'Ultraviolet', a sickly combination of harmonised pop vox and finger-popping shuffle beat, while the flipside fares slightly better with the droning Reese bass and lilting Balearic percussion of 'Bleu Monday'...www.boomkat.com

Don Froth - Balboa / Von

1. Balboa
2. Von

Pure, 'floor-scorching JukeXGarage rinse-out from a rogue San Fran operator. To date Don's done Techy House fusions for Phonica's white label series and self-released a small clutch of Bass grooves besides engineering duties for DJ Harvey, but for our $, this is his best yet. A-side is a pumping number called 'Balboa' fusing springy bass hits with surging rave signals and canny sense of syncopation somewhere between Dance Mania's maddest moments and latinzied Joe-style groove. Flipside 'Von' is equally energetic, full of percolating club rhythms and mesmerizing Techno-Disco synthlines for the dancers. Sick!...www.boomkat.com

Braille - Braille EP

1. A Meaning
2. Riverbed
3. Breakup
4. Chain Gang

Praveen Sharma's back with a fine four-tracker of emotive Garage-Tech rollers in his Braille guise. Working to the same formula of studied, melodic arrangements, deeper Garage rhythms and lush electronics found on his 'Year 3000' ace, he opens with 'A Meaning', a sweetly frisky electronic soul groove, next to the chest swelling Funky uplift of 'Riverbed' on the A-side. Flip it over and 'Breakup' tucks up a smart Broken Beat sound with deft Hip Hop samples and deeply layered arrangement, while 'Chaingang' keeps up the dope pressure with proper, shifty syncopation...www.boomkat.com

George Fitzgerald - Fernweh / Hearts

1. Fernweh
2. Hearts

Party people, Man Make Music send in their head boy George Fitzgerald to head up a shiny Double Garage session on their first release. It follows Fitzgerald's sought-after edit of Groove Theory's 'tell me' and a couple of Joy Orb-like pivots for Hotflush with two solid, gleaming fresh swingers. A-side 'Fernweh' is equipoised between crisp, mnml Techno, chord-flush House and UK Garage swing, and of course with the requisite dose of diced female vocal. Flipside, and 'Hearts' comes with punchier drums and a robust bass drop positing somewhere between Joe's slick shimmies and the Techno variants of Scuba...www.boomkat.com

Blawan - What You Do With What You Have

A. What You Do With What You Have
B. Vibe Decorum

Marked out as one to watch by ourselves back in January, Blawan has more than proved us right, debuting on R&S with the Bohla EP and following it with an array of essential productions and remixes. Top of the list naturally was that massively popular white label “Getting Me Down”, as well as a stellar contribution to the Hessle 116 & Rising comp, and the honour of remixing arch Oxford miserablists Radiohead.

Furthermore the Yorkshire lad has undertaken a new project with fellow R&S alumni Pariah in Karenn, as well as collaborating with Analogue Cops on a forthcoming Restoration twelve. News of the release of “What You Do With What You Have” will please the thousands of people that have been streaming a YouTube rip since it got aired on Rinse back in the spring.

It’s understandable too, as “What You Do With What You Have” twists a mangled sample of KDJ through the Blawan mixer of gnarled out acid lines, thumping drums and cavernous techno stabs. It’s complemented by “Vibe Decorum”, which is an equally fine example of Blawan’s talent for weaving vocal hooks into a unique sounding melange of drums and jagged rhythms, even going so far as to sample a round of ping pong...www.junodownload.com

LV & Joshua Idehen - Northern Line (Radio Edit) / Primary Colours (Extended Mix)

1. Northern Line (Radio Edit)
2. Primary Colours (Extended Remix)

Triadic Bass unit, LV link with Joshua Idehen for a bubbling Funky roller in tidy style. 'Northern Line' is frisky one, featuring Idehen reciting names of stops along London Underground's Northern Line over subtly dynamic drum syncopations and a coldly hydraulic bassline. On a ruder flex, 'Primary Colours' jams on a friday-night fresh House vibe layered with cut-up samples and a rogue early '90s 'ardcore vibe. Cheeky...www.boomkat.com

Pangaea - Hex / Fatalist

1. Hex
2. Fatalist

Ultra-crisp, hard-bodied future flexes from Pangaea, dropping one of his deadliest singles to date. The man's hardly known for his high work rate, releasing only a handful of records since he started in 2008, but he's evidently born of a rare breed who exert exacting quality control over their music, hence one of the most definitive catalogues in the modern Bass music canon. Disciplined, and distinctively rooted rhythmic control coupled with the keenest production values keep his tracks timelessly futurist, and no more so than 'Hex', a tautly syncopated and wickedly weighty ragga-jungle update infused with the nattiest chat and sci-fi dread synths to invigorating standards. The flip to this is 'Fatalist', an equally robust and dutty swinger, keeping the pressure locked deeper in the pocket with shredding drum shuffles and an LFO tweaked bassline begging for badman/gyal behaviour on the 'floor. Killer...www.boomkat.com

Samo Sound Boy - Shuffle Code EP

1. Shuffle Code
2. Me and You
3. Shuffle Code (Da Fresh Remix)
4. Shuffle Code (Ikonika Remix)

L.A producer Samo Sound Boy released his new “Shuffle Code” EP on NYC label Trouble & Bass. The release includes two original tracks and two remixes from Da Fresh and British producer Ikonika. Ikonika’s dark and twisted take on Shuffle Code...www.scatterblog.com

Distal - Angry Acid / French Science

01. Angry Acid
02. French Science

Rogue Acid and House romps from Atlanta's rising Bass music star. Assisted by R. Ellis aka Pinch on the A-side, 'Angry Acid' is a lampin' 4/4 juggernaut fuelled by concussive kicks and floor-chewing 303 sequence, done simple but effective with a nice touch of haunting pads hovering over the thing. On a more laidback flex, 'French Science' leans into a deeper, crooked modern House groove dipping on the halfstep and layered with breezy chords...www.boomkat.com

Damu - Mermaid EP

1. Mermaid
2. Beat Of Zen
3. Sequinny
4. Beat Of Zen (DJ Rashad & DJ Earl Remix)

Hyper-fruity House moves from Manchester's Damu, backed up with a swift but deadly Footwork remix by Chicago's Rashad and Earl. After establishing status as one-to-watch with his Silverback debut and some healthy hype from Fact magazine, Local Action present what is sure to be Damu's calling card for some time. From the ecstatic arpeggios and infectious roll of the title track, through the kinetic programming on 'Beat Of Zen' or the rainbow squirting synths colours on 'Sequinny' this is every bit the hottest new sh*t in circulation and totally ripe for fans of Brenmar, Jacques Greene, Julio Bashmore and that. On a more ruthless and shark-eyed tip, the Jukin' remix from Rashad and Earl is just immensely fierce and surely one of the finest Footwork bits we've encountered this year so far. Tip!...www.boomkat.com
