LA's Not Not Fun is an incredibly prolific label dealing in all manner of outré psych, synth and noise music. Both NNF and their 100% Silk sublabel are lovingly curated by Amanda Brown (LA Vampires/Pocahaunted) and Britt Brown (Robedoor) whose tastes run the gamut of esoteric underground sounds from a rhizome of artists across the globe. With over 250 releases (and counting) on vinyl, cassette, and digital, they've shaped a parallel hypnagogic reality where masticated memes from Dub, '70s psychedelic rock, Kosmische, '80s MOR pop and '90s dance music converge under the protection of gauzy tape noise and distortion. The label's resolutely Lo-fi stance is commendable, but never feels forced. It's more that they represent this scene as it should be, with dilated ears, a sincere sense of psychedelia and implacable intent. In our selection we've largely drawn from their recent diversions into Pseudo-Pop and soundtrack-y themes, featuring many taken from their super-limited cassette releases. The UK producer/DJ is a central figure in a clique of DJs and producers that includes Seth Troxler, Lee Foss and Art Department, who purvey minimal house with a sultry and accessible edge. Unsurprisingly, Jones’ Fabric mix contains a healthy sprinkling of tracks from the Hot Creations label he runs with Lee Foss, as well as the Crosstown Rebels and Visionquest imprints with whom he enjoys close ties. Amidst all this there are a couple of curveball inclusions, such as the excellent Holy Ghost remix of Panthers and perhaps most intriguingly some classic UK cold wave from Veronica Vasicka’s Minimal Wave label.

Berlin techno icon Ben Klock has mixed Berghain 04, the next installment in
Ostgut Ton's mix series.

Much like his sets at the notorious Berlin nightspot, the new mix rides a throbbing techno groove, interspersed with jacking house and hints of dubstep. About two thirds of the tracks are previously unreleased, including selections by DVS1, Martyn, Levon Vincent and Marcel Dettmann's remix of Junior Boys. The compilation also features two exclusive tracks by Klock: "Compression Session 1" and "Elfin Flight," a collaboration with Elif Bicer.

As with previous editions in the Berghain and Panorama Bar series, the new mix will be accompanied by two 12-inches, plus a digital-only EP. The remix is by no means a particularly modern phenomenon. In fact its roots can be traced all the way back to the Baroque era in which the great J.S. Bach offered listeners arguably the most bumper remix package of all time with his Goldberg Variations—30 different mash-ups of a repeated 16-bar chord progression. One shudders to think of the pressing costs had Bach been around during the vinyl heyday when disco pioneers Tom Moulton and Walter Gibbons were busy cutting tape and looping beats in order to create the "dance remix" as we know it today. Those early efforts of the late 1970s were intended simply as a way of extending popular tracks by honing in on more hypnotic rhythm sections (or "the breakdown," as that practice would eventually become known) to feed the insatiably heady appetite of New York's burgeoning club scene. In the 30 years that have followed, the discipline of the remix has evolved into a broad school where artists are invited freely to reinterpret the work of others, often laying the cornerstone of a record's success; and in 2010, if ever there were a pretender to the throne of Remaster of the Universe, Todd Terje would most certainly stake a claim.

Alongside compatriots Prins Thomas and Hans-Peter Lindstrom, he has spearheaded the Norwegian-nuanced disco sound (dub-pop, nu-Balearic, cosmic-Kraut—whatever you want to call it) that proved so popular towards the end of the last decade; yet the versatility and repeated success of his remix output alone evince that, as the brouhaha surrounding that particular scene begins to wane, Todd Terje looks set to maintain his ubiquity. Though if the press-release is to be believed, it won't be as a remixer: this compilation-cum-retrospective of his work, released by Permanent Vacation (who else?), supposedly marks "the end of the easy days of remixing, now Terje is gonna heal the world with proper self-composed music!"

If healing the world is indeed Terje's raison d'etre, he has certainly been making a fairly decent stab at it so far, as illustrated by the impressive CV that forms the basis of this two-disc compilation. Remixes for Jose Gonzalez, Antena and the now almost-canonical rework of Dolle Jolle's "Balearic Incarnation" have provided some of dance music's most blissed-out, loved-up moments in recent years, and are frankly so well known by now that any further discussion of their musical merit here seems like a waste of time. It's space, it's beach, it's cosmic, man. But moreover, it's good.

Resisting the temptation to rest entirely on his laurels, Terje manages to pack enough unheard curios into disc one's continuous mix to keep interest levels sufficiently buoyed. A cheeky cover of Ace of Base's trashy classic "All That She Wants" and a barbershop/swing-band version of his own anthem "Eurodans" are cute additions to a set which offers several alternative reworkings of the remixes we all know and love. This fondness for tailoring tracks not necessarily for release, but rather for playing purposes is a signature of the Norwegian's—his Tangoterje re-edits of acts as diverse as Wham! Chris Rea and Guns 'n' Roses, for instance, have earned him enviable notoriety—and this mix provides a decent account of Todd Terje, the DJ.

The nine stand-alone tracks, however, featured on disc two are arguably his finest efforts: the aforementioned "Balearic Incarnation," last year's crack shot at Shit Robot's "Simple Things" and his seemingly evergreen, pumped-up version of Lindstrom's "Another Station" are undoubtedly the highlights. An unreleased rework of a forthcoming Mungolian Jet Set track also keeps the carrot dangled in typically madcap fashion and shows why many an artist will be sad to learn that Terje has, at least for now, decided to hang up his remix boots.

Much as the suggestibly fickle and rapidly transient taste of the dance music world is to be decried, one cannot help but feel that the space-cadet sound from the North is past its peak and as such this compilation can at times feel like treading already well-trodden ground. Though these feelings can be readily countered with the assured knowledge that, of everything the Balearic breeze washed up on our shores over the last few years, Todd Terje's oeuvre is among (if not) the very best, and I can take as much pleasure counting this record as part of my collection as I can looking forward to the fulfilment of that press-release promise...www.residentadvisor.net

Ostgut Ton have announced plans to release a mix album in conjunction with Berlin-based dubstep night Sub:stance. Since making its Berghain debut back in July 2008, Scuba, AKA Paul Rose, and Paul Fowler's Sub:stance parties have pretty much become the byword for forward-thinking Berlin bass music. Mala, Martyn, The Bug and Joker have been among the many names brought to the German capital over the last 18 months. The night's first birthday celebrations even saw the bash expand throughout the Berghain complex, with Stacey Pullen and Dan Curtin playing Panorama Bar. With all this in mind, it should come as no surprise that OsgutTon will be the home for the Sub:stance mix CD. Compiled and mixed by Rose himself, the disc represents a snapshot of the Scuba sound, with four of his own unreleased cuts making the grade alongside a healthy slab of material from his Hotflush imprint. While nicely varied in its scope and sound, the mix has an undoubted air of the dark side throughout, typified by appearances from Surgeon, Ramadanman and Shackleton.

Gaining both critical acclaim for its catchiness as much for its atmosphere, the mutant strain of 140 bpm (or thereabouts) bass music currently infiltrating the global airwaves has morphed consistently over its recent life span; cross pollinating its acres of influences into the bundles of sub genres it now houses. It's become a strain of club music that revels in biting back against the perceptions of those outside of the core scene, those who consider dubstep to simply be a swelteringly tough warbling bassline that's complimented by a half step drum pattern and some airy atmospherics.

The warm fluid basslines of dark garage, the spacious precision of techno, the unabashed bolshiness of grime; the percussion led rhythm of funky house, the wanton bump of 2-step and the erratic fluorescent synthesized harmony of skweee are all constantly being harvested, peeled and juiced by a new wave of producers who are revelling in their mission to further the cocktail of sound that dubstep is currently thriving off.

Positioned as it is, in the midst of the UK capital, fabric has seen a torrent of vivacious ingenuity pass through its brickwork over its 10 year life, but of late, there has been an invasion (as much in the offices as on the club's dancefloors) of impeccably sculpted dubstep. The 'Elevator Music' project stands as an album in its own right, becoming more than just a collection of tracks. It's a collation of all the variant strains of dubstep; a completely original and exclusive collection of future bumps that reflects the embracive nature of fabric's dance floor music policy.

Like most of the artists that sign up to Fabric’s mix series, Dutchman Martijn Deijkers defies easy genre categorisation. Debut full-length Great Lengths fell nominally within the boundaries of dubstep, but like many at work within the form in 2009, Deijkers’ music was of interest mostly for the ways it wriggled shy of convention – a mellow and colourful twist on the sound, informed equally by his past in house and techno.
What this means for his Fabric mix, loosely, is a whole lot of variety. Deijkers claims it’s not specifically made to work on the dancefloor, but beyond the opening Joy Fantastic – one of the more Outkast-flavoured tracks from Hudson Mohawke’s Butter album – if anything, this mix is conspicuous for the upbeat tempos and exquisite complexity of its rhythmic programming.
While steeped in the post-UK garage and UK funky sound, it is nonetheless dominated by producers keen to put an individual stamp on their productions. So, Zomby’s Little Miss Naughty is a future-tribal bounce pockmarked with air horns and junglist slogans. Roska’s Without It is sparse UK Funky with blink-and-you’ll-miss-‘em keyboard stabs. And Dorian Concept’s Trilingual Dance Sexperience is a splattery, scattershot take on hyped-up G-funk that’s almost quease-inducing in its wonky sensory overload.
Too much of this stuff can rot your teeth, though, so Martyn also dips a little into the more reliable step of 4/4. A Ben Klock remix of his own Is This Insanity featuring sometime Kode9 collaborator Spaceape is an appealing change of pace, while DJ Bone’s We Control The Beat is crisp Detroit techno that makes its home here chiefly thanks to the clean wooziness of its synths.
There are a few jarring moments – a Martyn remix of electro-pop trio The Detachments is an ill fit, the vocals standing out like a sore thumb – but largely, it’s testament to Deijkers’ way with a slippery beat that this holds together so well.

Mule Electronic are set to release their first ever ambient compilation in April, in recognition of the label's fifth anniversary.

Entitled Enjoy The Silence the collection features tracks from many of the artists that Mule have been working with closely over the past year, including Lawrence, Minilogue and Terre Thaemlitz under his DJ Sprinkles guise. Hiroshi Watanabe (AKA Kaito) includes a track produced under his own name, whilst the CD is rounded off with the debut effort from fledgling producer Takuwan. Followers of Mule will be happy to know that all of the tracks are exclusive to the release, with the DJ Sprinkles cut being the only exception.

Even since before dubstep exploded into the public consciousness at the beginning of 2006 Tectonic Records have been one of maybe three or four labels that have maintained a focussed vision and reliably consistent output pushing at the boundaries of the genre. Helmed by DJ Pinch, and featuring a roll call of the best producers in the game, the label still holds a vice-like grip on the scene particularly as the latest series of Tectonic Plates fixes its place in the bags of dubstep players across the world. As the series reaches it's climax this CD version drops with one disc of unmixed tracks from the vinyls and another mixed by Pinch featuring too many exclusives to count. The unmixed CD collects together tracks from Martyn, 2562, Flying Lotus, Joker, Pinch, Peverelist ('Junktion' remixed by Shed!!!), Skream, Benga and RSD for a veritable Bass jamboree to enjoy in the comfort of your own home. For a proper future shock check the second disc mixed by Pinch. Starting with Peverelist's remix of 'Waterfallz' is a choice move in our books, but proceeding to drop unreleased and exclusive tracks from Loefah's 'Just A Beat', Peverelist's highly sought after 'Blues', Mala's Answer Me', 2652's 'Third Wave' & 'Love In Outer Space' is just ruling tings hard! I can't be arsed writing the rest of the tracks down (there's 27 in total) but you can rest assured they're all of the highest calibre and mixed tighter than a pair of Topman duds. Well recommended!

Electro geek chic pioneers Hot Chip are due to curate a new instalment of the mix series 'Bugged Out'. Hot Chip are one of the most celebrated groups in dance music. Blending the liquid funk of Prince with some left field beats the band have hit upon a unique formula.

Last year's album 'Made In The Dark' bowled over critics with its breath-taking sonic ambition. It also helped somewhat that the album spawned one of the year's biggest singles in 'Ready For The Floor'. The forthcoming compilation will be released through New State on April 27th. Hot Chip will follow in the footsteps of Erol Alkan, Miss Kittin, Klaxons and Felix Da Housecat.

The full tracklisting has yet to be released but it is know that the group are said to include tracks from John Tejada, Mark Romboy, Dominik Eulberg & Gabriel Ananda and an incredible exclusive new Hot Chip tune called ‘Take It In’. Fans will no doubt fondly remember the group's DJ Kicks comp, and its versatile display of genres. This time round, the band find room for Fleetwood Mac, Luther Vandross and The Doobie Brothers in an effort to shake the party!

Following in the vein of his 2006 Essential Mix, Anders Trentemoller has composed a 21 track blend of the producer's time honoured favourites, spanning four decades of music. Made up from a healthy slab of artists native to Copenhagen, the mix also manages to field appearances from Emiliana Torrini, The Raveonettes, Beach House and Alan Vega. A floor-facing DJ set this ain't. The album will be the first in the Harbour Boat Trips series for the nascent HFN label who have decided upon a decidedly watery theme for their mixes: A selection of "outstanding artists" will be invited to commit to disc their musical interpretations of a particular harbour and its surroundings with the hope of capturing something altogether more poignant than your standard DJ mix.

The Lab 01-Loco Dice finds NRK Music (already known for its Coast2Coast and Back In The Box series) inaugurating a new compilation series which will assume the form of a two-disc set of future-oriented electronic dance music. The first installment comes courtesy of the Tunisian-born and Düsseldorf-raised Loco Dice who has garnered attention for single releases on Minus, Cocoon, and Cadenza and a debut artist album on his own Desolat imprint. The Lab places him behind the decks for a deep and delectable set of grooving house music that spreads twenty-seven tracks across two very differently styled discs. The first half weaves fourteen tracks into an ultra-mobile and alluring mix that's heavy on percussion and bass, while the more vocal-oriented disc two sets its sights on the soulful sides of classic deep house, Detroit techno, and Chicago house.

Disc one slinks into position with tribal percussion and metronomic rhythm patterns (Akiko Kiyama's “Hakobi”) that grow in intensity and consequently entrancement as they effect segues from one cut to the next. Throughout the disc, Loco Dice keeps the focus on the bottom end by emphasizing percussion, house rhythms, and low-riding bass lines. The crack of the snare contrasts with the bright tingle of the triangle while a female voice whispers “Beautiful, beautiful,” after which a house plunge occurs with claps, funky hi-hats, and a thumping kick drum leading the charge. The African vibe moves to the forefront with an energized mix of kalimbas and chanting children in Chris Lattner's (what else?) “African Children.” The mix carries on through Robert Dietz's “Klondike” and Ben Klock's “Bones & Strings Dub” of Kerri Chandler's “Pong,” eventually concentrating its attention on a series of seductive deep house productions (with a few moments of driving, piano-driven Latin swing added for extra spice). MHM 1 (“Bubububadub”), Damian Schwartz & Guti (“Sals-n”), Terrence Dixon (a Mathias Kaden remix of “Below Radar”), and foundsound's Someone Else (“You Don't Got Me”) get face time before Alex Flatner (a Damian Schwartz remix of “Perfect Circles”) and Mirko Loko (“Serena”) take us out—a fine end to a sinuous and funky mix.

Plunging deep from the outset, the second half opens with the lush dreaminess of Nick Holder's “Inside Your Soul” and Jay Haze's “Mama Coca” but turns truly funky when Terry Lee Brown Jr.'s fabulous “Everyday” struts into position. Thereafter the mix spins its wheels for a few minutes but picks itself up the moment DJ Ali's “You Don't Know” arrives with its falsetto vocalizing, string stabs, and bass-pumping soul. A Plastic Avengers remix of Joseph Malik's “Believe and See” follows that's just as enticing, especially when the song's soulful vocal crosses paths with the deep groan of an acoustic bass. Franck Roger (“Take Off”), 95 North (“Forever Underground”), and Audio Soul Project (“Song For Fred”) perpetuate the late-night vibe, after which the mix starts to decompress before exiting via Tyree Cooper's utopian “Love.” Loco Dice professes to play “deep, groovy, chunky, driving, 123 Music for the terrace” and you'll find no shortage of it in this encompassing, 160-minute collection...www.textura.org
