A Humber
B Humber (Sven Weisemann Remix)
Ramadanman. Say it out loud. Go on, it's fun. Ramadanman. The way it rolls off your tongue is beautiful, but you still have to consciously try hard to get it just right. His music is the same way. Considered, but seemingly effortless and graceful, each sound slips into place at the right moment, until a percussively driven and bass-heavy ball of sound forms and then alternately unwinds and rolls back into shape.
So it is with "Humber," Ramadanman's effort for Appleblim's Apple Pips label. Sonically reminiscent of his recent Soul Jazz outing "Core," Ramadanman's percussional energy is layered under an ever-evolving bright synth line. A simple echoing bass drum sets things off, a hi-hat sneaks its way in, a synth chime makes an appearance and from then on it's an involving and pleasant ride through the track's resonant valleys and peaks.
On the flip, Sven Weisemann gives "Humber" a Rumber remix. The tempo is taken down in what turns out to be a beautiful dub techno number. The driving and uplifting nature of the original is transformed into a mourning dubby and spacious track, with echoing percussion providing the backdrop for sorrowful synth and string motifs. Weisemann's take is soothing and harmonically beautiful if a bit too dramatic, especially the ill-fitted vocal samples...www.residentadvisor.net
