A Made Up Sound - Demons

A Demons
B1 Extra Time
B2 Demons (Reprise)

The Hague's Dave Huismans merges the disparate worlds of dubstep and four-to-the-floor electronics, occupying a middle ground that seems more relevant than ever due to bass music's polarisation of chainsaw wobblers and lower tempo explorations. Although his material as A Made Up Sound is slightly closer to traditional house and techno than his 2562 productions for Pinch's Tectonic label, Huismans always manages to conjure up a sound that is recognisably his own.

His latest transmission as A Made Up Sound is a slightly pacier offering than his "Alarm"/"Crisis" 12-inch, rooting all three tracks at a 130 BPM tempo that will please both house-influenced bass music DJs and more energetic techno selectors. B-side cut "Extra Time" should definitely appeal to the former of these two camps; its swung snares and sharply pitched bleepy lead contrasting with the steady intensity built by the sweeping synth progression that occupies the track's second half.

The two real highlights on the package, though, are the two versions of the title track, which are wildly different from one another. While the shorter reprise utilises stuttering rhythmic blasts and deep, reverberated chords to engage the listener, the main cut keeps the groove bouncing with gruff low end and slinky swung percussion...www.residentadvisor.net

A Made Up Sound - Alarm / Crisis

01 Alarm
02 Crisis

Funky, post-Detroit rhythm trips from man like Dave Huismans aka 2562. He's reserved these cuts for his own AMUS imprint and with good reason. The clipped dip 'n swing effect of 'Alarm' is given a curiously off-key melody making for one of his oddest but most intriguing DJ tools for those times when you need to take it loose and fonky. 'Crisis' on the flip finds a tighter groove, driven by uniquely timed acid bass refluxes and spun out with cottony synthlines to keep your head balanced. Dutty house for the rudest players. A Made Up Sound - Sun Touch

01 Sun Touch
02 Drain
03 Untitled (Shortcut)

Dave Huismans aka 2562 unloads the second release for his A Made Up Sound imprint. Compared to the outright Detroit ebullience of AMS 001, this plate acts as an outlet for his more esoteric leanings, constructing three tracks that don't feel like immediate 'floor hits, but burn with a more cosmic and atmospheric abstraction while still driven by incredibly efficient and well-tuned rhythmic engines. 'Sun Touch' scopes the scene's minimalistic radar bleeps and Radiophonic synth textures carried by an itchy Shake-styled rhythm, while 'Drain' enters a sombre zone of hazy grey drones and spring loaded steppers rhythms for the more adventurous DJs. Finally 'Shortcut' gives time for some ruff drum machine experimentation harking back to his 'Archive' release for Clone's Basement series. He's still way out on his own, which makes each and every one of his records worth checking...www.boomkat.com

A Made Up Sound - Archive

A1 Wire
A2 Bounce
B1 Disconnect
B2 On & On

If you're not familar with Dave Huismans by now, get to know! The highly skilled Dutch dude has wrecked everyone with his dubstep and broke-step releases for Tectonic and Subsolo over the last couple of years blending garage, techno, house and dubstep functions, but for this release he's concentrated on the House element for Clone's new no-nonsense Basement series. 'Wire' starts the session with groovy square basslines and shuffled housing patterns, before 'Bounce' dips in with swooping bass and cracking Shake alike percussion. Keeping up the vibe 'Disconnect' trips out on warm chords and a hazy dancefloor atmosphere underlined with studied Chicago beats, while 'On&On' jacks up with a supremely crafty rhythm stuttering with crisp handclaps and pulsing acid bass. Badass!...www.boomkat.com
