Distal - Boss of the South EP

1. Boss of the South
2. Coke Bottle
3. Boss of the South (Sinden Remix)
4. Boss of the South (Capracara's South of Heaven Remix)
5. Coke Bottle (Wheez-ie Remix 1)
6. Coke Bottle (Wheez-ie Remix 2)

Distal's arrived in a big way in 2011, and his debut for Sinden's Grizzly is possibly his strongest release yet. 'Boss Of the South' is fractally busy yet solidly rolling, flicking in fragments of mentasms, 8-bit chirrups and Jukin' sample stabs, while the muscular, rolling subs lock it down for the dance, and 'Coke Bottle' works percolating Toms like Chicago's finest, but with a laidback Southern tilt that's more compatible with UK 'floors. Remixing, Sinden evens the keel with a rollin' 4/4 rework of 'Boss…' and Capracara drops some sexy New Jersey swing vibes with a kinky infusion of rave dirt, while Wheez-ie freaks out two uptempo Footwork versions of 'Coke Bottle'...www.boomkat.com

Rustie - Sunburst EP

1. Neko
2. Dragonfly
3. Beast Nite
4. Chew
5. Hyperthrust
6. Starwolf

Since 2007 Wegie rogue Rustie has decimated the world of electronic music with a handful of exhilarating 12"s. The demented 'Sunburst' is his long awaited debut for Warp, lurching into his future vision of hyper-coloured prog-rock, crystallized digital emotions and bombastic rhythm dynamics. Much like his 'Jagz The Smack' debut, there's no clear banner to this style, crushing everything from ultra-modern American Funk to '80s synth dreams, 8-Bit Japanese cuteness and stadium-worthy riffage. The closest comparison would perhaps be to his Glasgow brethren, Hudson Mohawke, or LA's finest Flying Lotus, but this guy is still way out on his own platform, zapping baddies with lazer-boogie synthlines and wrecking booties with deceptively fluid rhythm constructions. In 'Neko' we find his most distinctive statement, like a sugar-rush fever dream with Rustie as some Macauley Culkin figure in a John Hughes movie soundtracked by Outkast and a Scottish marching band. In a perfect world, the heroic swell of 'Dragonfly' would be topping the charts, while the 3D spirograph squiggle of 'Hyperthrust' shows how prog-rock can still be clever and retain a sense of forward funk without spooling overboard into the most elaborate math-wank ever conceived. Imagine Araab Muzik jamming with Battles in an import-only Japanese arcade game and you're on the button. Highly recommended!...www.boomkat.com

Mille - Stargazers EP

01. Ghost Dancer
02. Stargazers
03. Crysteena

Mille from Stockholm, Sweden. He has been producing house music when he was 20, then took a break from music, ditching it for 3D graphics design studies and just last fall, he decided to get back into production again. It seems like he finally found his very own style this time around, drawing a lot of inspiration from commodore 64 and sega mega drive games as well as the french electro scene, although the only artist over there who can really be compared to him would be Danger.

With these influences, it's no surprise, that Mille combines chiptune leads and commodore 64 sid soundchip-style arpeggios with elements of today's dance music.

Cof Cof - Safari

1. Cell Phone
2. Arrested
3. Suffering Safari
4. Third
5. T-Shirt

Cof Cof are Alex Cuadrado and Ana Analogica from Valencia, Spain. Their songs are pretty minimalist without being just vocal tracks; stacked blips and lo-fi 8-bit instruments bounce around catchy lines. There are bits of Yelle here, bits of Bonde do Role there, without any rap or outright danceability and with a distinct aesthetic and silly nature as fitting for reverence and snobbery as it is for unadulterated Nintendo tinged revelry.

Their lead single, Playmy HDD is broken has a clear sense of humor, with it’s vague analogies and forthright, tongue in cheek theme, but is still as viable as any lyricism from The Teenagers or CSS.

Cats In Paris - Courtcase 2000

01 Lovelovelovelovelove
02 Foxes
03 Cold Products
04 Castle Walls
05 Button (Part One)
06 Flamethrowers
07 Goojfc
08 The Curse Of Jonah Brian
09 Button (Part Two)
10 Loose Tooth Tactile
11 (How To) Harvest Yourself

New bands are often much of a muchness; uninspired soundalikes with precious few ideas of their own. It's painfully rare an album comes along from a relative unknown sounding almost completely unlike anything else doing the rounds. In the case of a band with its geographical roots in Manchester, it'd be easy to compare and contrast Cats In Paris with 'indie' darlings de jour The Courteeners and The Ting Tings, but 'Courtcase 2000' is a record so far removed from those altogether simpler sounds that it'd simply be a waste of a paragraph. Oops.

Sure, like anyone else Cats In Paris have their influences: Animal Collective (and who wouldn't want to take something from the Baltimore troupe?) and Deerhoof; Los Campesinos!, perhaps - but the multifarious noise they unleash on their debut LP hints at a band who've spent time thinking about and developing their own sound as opposed to tabbing out songs by their heroes and pressing 'repeat'.

In the hands of the less precocious, the likes of "Lovelovelovelovelove" or "Goojfc" (Get Out Of Jail Free Card) might sound overblown or ham-fisted. Packing so many different ideas into even four or five minutes isn't easy but the execution is near perfect: burbling synths, soaring violins, and Michael Watson and Sara Beard's keening vocals (seriously, if cats could sing... why they chose the name, perhaps?) eases us in before "Foxes'' power-prog-pop takes over. Here, what could be easily be a three minute indie dancefloor hit winds up a sort of space-age slow-jam waltz - pretty beguiling stuff.

The aforementioned "Goojfc" and "The Curse Of Jonah Brian" channel further disparate influences: the former, YACHT's muscular electro-pop, the latter could be Madness meets Muse on Mars. At midnight. Enough with the ridiculous analogies, though, because what you really need to know about 'Courtcase 2000' is that it's an incredibly accomplished LP - maiden or otherwise. Not an instant hit, but you could, of course, say that about all the best records... unless you're still reeling from the Ting Tings comment above, that is.

No first attempt is perfect, though, and there are moments when Cats In Paris venture too close to the sickeningly twee. Nobody - well, certainly not this writer - wants to hear lines like "Way cool, way cool, way cool, way cool" ("Foxes") or "We'll eat 'til sick comes/And draw a circle" ("Castle Walls"), but such blots are refreshingly rare on what is a pretty-darn-close to impeccable debut copybook. These Cats, then, have got the tunes as well as the cream. A bright future seems assured.
