Perhaps taking a leaf out of Kompakt's Pop Ambient book, this vast Shitkatapult release celebrates the label's one hundredth catalogue number with a selection of predominantly beatless, often experimental productions. One of the earliest 'wtf?' moments comes courtesy of Apparat, who offers an unforseeably valid remix of Johnny Cash's 'I Heard The Lonesome Whistle Blow', caking the Nashville legend's delivery in sparkling granular textures. Also on the first disc, Kero goes a bit Kim Cascone on 'Neoizenov10', while The Orb combine wonderfully tactile field recordings with eloquent electronics, sounding rather like Biosphere on 'Oopa'. Pick of the bunch is Jan Jelinek's 'Happening Tone' though, which gets reworked as a warm, jazzy glitch study by the reliably exceptional Frank Bretschneider. There's more good stuff on the second disc, starting off with Pluramon & Julia Hummer's 'If Time Was On My Side', which is full of radiant texture and the kind of Cocteau Twins/My Bloody Valentine style production we've come to expect from Marcus Schmickler in his songwriting mode, while other great contributions arrive from Schieres on the electroacoustic dissection 'All' and Soap & Skin's plaintive piano and recorder performance 'Brother Of Sleep'.
