Veronica Falls - Veronica Falls

01. Found Love In A Graveyard
02. Right Side Of My Brain
03. The Fountain
04. Misery
05. Bad Feeling
06. Stephen
07. Beachy Head
08. All Eyes On You
09. The Box
10. Wedding Day
11. Veronica Falls
12. Come On Over

At the end of the video for Veronica Falls' "Bad Feeling", Roxanne Clifford, the group's bob-haired singer/guitarist, clad in a dashingly fey polka-dot blouse, picks up an antique book-- the ultimate twee signifier-- and lights it on fire. Given indie rock's recent jangle-pop overload, and the comments that Veronica Falls have made in the press ("people like to romanticize about C86 [but] there were lots of rubbish bands associated with it..."), it's tempting to wonder aloud: is "Bad Feeling" the C86 version of that video where George Michael goes iconoclastic on us and sets his own leather jacket ablaze?

Well, maybe not, but at the very least it's a decent visual metaphor for the band's sound: expertly stagy revivalism with the slightest hint of mutiny. You could have said the same thing of Slumberland labelmates and fellow fresh-faced indie poppers the Pains of Being Pure at Heart when they first burst out the gates with Pastels badges on their sleeves-- the quartet's self-titled debut hits with the same sort of immediacy that that first Pains LP did. Both records do familiar things so well that, occasionally, momentarily, they actually trick you into thinking you've never heard anything like them before.

But, of course, you have. In fact, if you've been paying any attention to Glasgow/London hybrid Veronica Falls, you've actually heard some of these very songs before: The single "Found Love in a Graveyard" made the rounds almost two years ago, and then came "Beachy Head", "Bad Feeling", and "Come on Over" earlier this year. But after a run of strong 7"'s, their self-titled debut finally confirms that Veronica Falls are more than a singles band. Though they operate with a pretty limited sonic palette (boy/girl harmonies; dueling, reverb-drenched guitars; lots of tambourine), there's a sustained momentum over these 12 tracks that even manages to bring in some unexpected influences-- "Beachy Head" sounds like a zombified Mamas and the Papas thrashing at surf-punk guitars with shards of glass.

Given the group's penchant for ghosts and reverb, it's tempting to grab for a familiar collection of low-hanging adjectives: dreamy, ethereal, haunting-- except that, actually, Veronica Falls is none of these things. There's a striking physicality to these songs, and Guy Fixsen and Ash Workman's production makes every tambourine beat hit with the clarity of a shattering window. The guitar sound is immaculate: Clifford and James Hoare's strings don't jangle so much as bristle-- taut chords that dart restlessly in and out of each other's way. There's a clarity of texture-- a specificity even-- to every element of the band's sound. Which makes it something of an anomaly: shoegaze that looks you square in the eye.

Thematically speaking, shit's dark. There's a song called "Misery", there are not one but two songs in which the narrator's lover might be a ghost ("Graveyard", "Bad Feeling"), and though "Beachy Head" might sound like a carefree postcard from indie rock's current backdrop of choice, it's actually about jumping off a cliff and drowning yourself. Thankfully, the record ends on a high in every sense: "Come on Over" is perhaps the most hopeful-- and best-- track the band's got to their name. "Crimson and clover, I'll touch your shoulder," Clifford sings over the mounting tension of a furiously strummed guitar. It's the Veronica Falls aesthetic in miniature: the ghosts of pop past conjured convincingly and intimately enough to feel like flesh and blood...www.pitchfork.com

Lily of the Valley hails from the northern town of Japan, Sendai. They are known to the crowds with their contribution to the great Japanese shoegazer compilation album “Total Feedback”. Nozomi (vocal, keyboard, programming, etc) and Tsukasa (guitars) creates dream-pop songs which consists of multiple chorus layers, soft beautiful guitars and electronic productions. They have released their debut album called “My Secret Garden” in 2009 from Happy Prince and the album was highly praised by shoegaze/dream pop fans not only in Japan but also all over the world. On their second album called “aquatree” they show big improvement on electronic productions and more sophisticated chorus layers and song writing. They are going to play with Letting Up Despite Great Faults (from Los Angels), Broken Little Sister and Twee Grrrls Club in Tokyo on April 2011.

Team Ghost - We All Shine

1. Lonely, Lonely, Lonely
2. A Glorious Time
3. Sur Nous Les Étincelles Du Soleil
4. Echoes
5. Only You Can Break My Heart
6. Colors In Time
7. Deaf
8. Red Light Corridor
9. High Hopes
10. Celebrate What You Can't See
11. It's Been A Long Way, But We're Free
12. Signs & Wonders
13. Into My Arms
14. We All Shine

Behind Team Ghost hides a ghost. Not a lonely soul with ball and chain but a star-eyed boy certainly not content with the idea of following the latest trend & determined to draw his very own musical path. Nicolas Fromageau – originally a founding member of post-french touch duo M83 along with Anthony Gonzales – co-wrote the first two albums “M83″ (2002) and “Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts” (2003). He decided to part ways before the third album was released. He left Antibes, M83′s hometown in the South of France, for Paris and formed Team Ghost, backed by Christophe Guérin (his sparring partner in this project) and Jean-Philippe Talaga (ex-Gooom founder, who became Team Ghost producer / manager). Nicolas and Christophe have been working on the music for a few years already. They created Kiss Me First, their own production team and have started playing live shows here and there...www.thesuperslice.com

Youngteam - Daydreamer

1. Intro
2. Daydreamer
3. Your Love
4. Black Lodge
5. My Only Friend
6. Northern Star
7. Not From Here
8. Summertime
9. Strange Days
10. Introducing Mr Gladstone
11. Ashes
12. Goodbye

A Swedish band named after a Mogwai album - I was pretty certain that Youngteam would be some kind of whimsical Northern European post rock. Here's the news - it's actually not, and the band seem to (oddly enough) prefer British shoegaze than our shimmery Ebowed friends from Glasgow. Just flick over to album centerpiece 'Northern Star' and you'll hear the kind of blurred, distortion heavy fretwork we'd have expected from Ride in their glory days. Unlike recent nu-gazers like M83 and Ulrich Schnauss, these Swedes don't seem to care too much for updating their craft or injecting it with electronic flourishes just so you know we're in 2011, these are good fashioned rock songs with all the grit and amp hum you would expect to hear in a pub basement in 1988. And that's a very good thing indeed...www.boomkat.com

Vivian Girls - Everything Goes Wrong

01 Walking Alone at Night
02 I Have No Fun
03 Can't Get Over You
04 Desert
05 Tension
06 Survival
07 The End
08 When I'm Gone
09 Out for the Sun
10 I'm Not Asleep
11 Double Vision
12 You're My Guy
13 Before I Start to Cry

At least superficially, this album is a great step forward for the Vivian Girls. It took them six days to record it as opposed to the three days it took for Vivian Girls, and the songs are longer, too -- some almost twice as long as those on their debut. The tracks are darker and moodier, but as this is a notoriously divisive band, don't expect a complete reinvention that will bring the naysayers around. The punk rock influences are still there, as well as the one-take recording philosophy that brought about the accusations of posing and incompetence in the first place...www.prefixmag.com

Magnetic Morning- A.M.

01 spring unseen
02 at a crossroads, passive
03 indian summer
04 come back
05 no direction
06 motorway
07 the wrong turning
08 out in the streets
09 and i wonder
10 athens 5

The indie rock duo known as Magnetic Morning, comprised of Interpol drummer Sam Fogarino and Swervedrivers Adam Franklin, plans to wake up listeners with debut LP A.M. Available now digitally, the album released physically on Jan. 27 via Friend or Faux Recordings and features The Album Leafs Jimmy LaVelle on keys and The Still Outs Josh Stoddard on bass. A departure from the musicians respective bands, Magnetic Morning explores new musical terrorities, with A.M. being described by Wired as the perfect daydream release.

Hatcham Social - Postcard In Colours

01 So So Happy Making
02 Wild Creatures
03 Penelope (Under My Hat)
04 Til The Dawn
05 Jabberwocky
06 Berlin

"Thought I'd break into bits and pieces," sings Hatcham Social's Tobias Kidd on the first of this U.S.-only EP's six tracks. Given the headlong rush and brittle texture of the band's music, it's a valid concern.

Beloved of the Charlatans' Tim Burgess, who produced "Penelope (Under My Hat)" and "'Til the Dawn," as well as ex-Creation Records honcho Alan McGee, the London trio don't wear their influences lightly. The frenetic strum, loping bass lines and quavering vocals on 'Postcard In Colours' owe more than a few of their musical chromosomes to the agitated twee of Orange Juice, Josef K and other bands from Scotland's (wait for it) Postcard Records. In case that's not enough of a nod and a wink, one of their early singles is called, "How Soon Is Then?"

But however obvious their forebears, Hatcham Social's take unexpected turns, like the dissonant guitar solo that cuts through the joyful bounce of "So So Happy Making." "Berlin" is more reminiscent of Pere Ubu than any of Britpop's flavors, and "Jabberwocky" sets the words of Lewis Carroll's famous poem to an ominous surf guitar backing track.

Drawn from assorted singles and stray tracks, 'Postcard' sprawls in all directions. It's less a cohesive statement than a way for Stateside fans to whet their appetite for the band's forthcoming full-length. Just don't consume too quickly, or you might end up with a mouthful of glass.

The Sleepover Disaster - Hover

01. Friend
02. Code Breaker
03. Funnel Cloud
04. Dark Star
05. Tremble
06. On A Sunday
07. Make You Sing
08. Edward Said
09. Songwriting For Dummies

Inspired one night by a particularly great set by local Fresno band Flaming June, songwriter/guitarist Luke Giffen and drummer Vince Corsaro formed The Sleepover Disaster in 1997. Sharing a love of the late 80s/early 90s Shoegazer scene, they immediately set about crafting a sound that combined big, atmospheric guitars with melodic songwriting and driving rhythms. The result is a sound rooted in the Shoegaze genre, but decidedly updated, as well as an energetic live show.

Surviving a few line-up changes in the early years, The Sleepover Disaster eventually found bassist/engineer Eric Peters, whose knowledge of the recording studio greatly enhanced the band’s recorded sound.

The Sleepover Disaster has played all over the West Coast with bands such as Earlimart, Starflyer 59, Radar Bros, Great Northern, and Lagwagon, along the way releasing four recordings. Their most recent releases, Loud is the New Quiet (2004), and The Oceanographer EP (2005), received glowing reviews from indie zines The Big Takeover, Dagger, and Losing Today, as well as many stellar web reviews, and garnered college radio and independent radio play across the U.S. and internationally...www.last.fm

Lotte Kestner - China Mountain

1 Crush the Bird
2 Compasses
3 Fainting Spells
4 Leif Erikson
5 Fineline
6 Temperature
7 Face Shape
8 Cattleya
9 Before You Are
10 Lula Boat
11 Fainted Twice

Lotte Kestner is the solo project of Trespassers William's singer/songwriter Anna-Lynne Williams. Recorded over a year in her bedroom, and mixed in a Seattle studio with Trespassers bandmate Matt Brown, these songs are more lyric-driven and bare than her other projects. While most of the album is made up of layers of Anna-Lynne's voice and acoustic guitar playing, there are brief appearances from Jeff Martin of Idaho, Ross Simonini of Trespassers William, and Toby Campbell of Anomie Belle, on a number of instruments. As well as harmonica, keys, drums, ukulele, and harp played by Anna-Lynne. China Mountain includes a cover of "Leif Erikson", originally by Interpol.
China Mountain was greatly influenced by current experimental folk music, artists such as Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart, and CocoRosie. Though there are still many elements of the shoegaze and British pop music that are present in Trespassers William. As well as being greatly influenced by literary classics, as reflected in the name of the project.
Over the past few years, Anna-Lynne has lent her voice to songs by the Chemical Brothers, Minotaur Shock, Noise Unit, Phononoir, Anomie Belle, Au Revoir Borealis, and AFI. Her band Trespassers William's songs have played in several feature films and TV shows...www.cdbaby.com

Air Formation - Things That Don't Exist

01 Things That Don't Exist
02 Fires

Brighton's Air Formation and one-time Pennyblackmusic Bands Night stars return with two great new tracks. This is the debut vinyl release from the Bristol based label, Distant Noise, which normally limits itself with each new item in its catalogue to just 100 CDRs.

'Things That Don't Exist' recalls the Chameleons second album, 'What Does Anything Mean ? Basically', with its lush drums and dreamy guitar. Singer Matt Bartram's vocals are haunting and take you on a journey. This is perfect late night music to dream too.

'Fires' starts off sounding a little like the Cure's 'A Forest', before drifting off into a slow trance-like pace. Eventually guitars and loud drums make their presence known and by the end of the track Air Formation are making a noise that early Ride would be proud of...www.pennyblackmusic.co.uk

3. A Lynx in the Tall Grass
4. Forest Fortress

10. Flood Waves

The Brazillian Inverness is composed of: Lucas de Almeida on guitar and voice Marcio Barcha on drums, Mateus Perito on guitar and voice and Flávio Fraschetti on bass. Their debut album “Forest Fortress” is due to come out in the first half of 2009.

Pattern Is Movement - All Together

1. Bird
2. Peach Trees
3. Trolley Friend
4. Right Away
5. Sea Captain
6. Sound Of Your Voice
7. Jenny Ono
8. Sylvia
9. Brown And Hard Curtains
10. Elephant

Pattern Is Movement's latest album is one of those things that's starting (sadly) to be a relative rarity -- a winsome avant-pop album with rock roots that actually is a treat instead of an overfrosted wedding cake. The fact that the opening "Bird" starts off sounding like a sample from some dreamscape '60s kids show but is in fact a full original is a wonderful treat; one gets the
sense that the two-man band actually wants to keep people guessing from the start. Throughout All Together that feeling of a soundtrack to an unsettled but still welcoming Technicolor world continues, part Joe Meek concept album and part funhouse ride. It's probably no surprise that Andrew Thiboldeaux's main credit is "beauty" rather than "vocals," as there's a real sense of that quality throughout -- not in a twee way as often understood, but almost in that breathlessly rich sense Mercury Rev last conjured up on See You on the Other Side. (Though in amusing contrast, bandmate Chris Ward is credited as "beast."Perhaps unsurprisingly some of the least involving moments occur when his work is toned down or kept well in the background.) The layering swell of keyboards and tones on "Peach Trees" is one prime moment, while the kettle drums and starburst twinkles on "Sound of Your Voice," not to mention the horn fanfares (mock or not), all add to the joy.

Boo and Boo Too - No Tempo

1. I Know Nothing's All Right
2. I'll Be Your Whore
3. Obviously
4. Bottom Of The Lake
5. No Tempo
6. Black Buggy
7. Sometimes At Night
8. KGB
9. White Light, Dark Sheets
10. Alleys In Whitechapel

"Boo And Boo Too are a Lawrence, Kansas sextet with fang to spare. Specializing in incredibly muscular, sleeves-rolled-up guitar rock that throws up great walls of fly paper melody, their new full-length No Tempo, is a stunner. "I Know Nothing's Alright" is that album's towering opener and its squalls, like those in standout "No Tempo," are some of the most breathtaking I've heard in a while..." - www.rcrdlbl.com
--------------
"[No Tempo] continues on as a work of sweltering hard driving claustrophobia intermingled with shoegaze, NYC noise, and a dark myopia reminiscent of The Cure's Pornography." - www.parasitesandsycophants.com
--------------
"But what makes No Tempo such a damn listenable record is that Boo and Boo Too are able to draw from several areas of music's past and blend all their influences into a sound that's familiar before it's fresh. It's loud without being obnoxious, current without being too trendy, and vintage shoegaze without being patronizing. In its entirety, No Tempo is as straightforward an offering of bottled manicisim as one can get." - www.baeblemusic.com

Pia Fraus - After Summer

1 Springsite
2 Yenissey
3 Sailing Yes
4 Doctor Optimism
5 House Eaten
6 After Summer
7 Late Again
8 Mute The Birds
9 Loveloops
10 Far Fade Whisper

Clairecords is extremely proud to present Pia Fraus' new album "After Summer". After 5 long years, we welcome the Estonian pop geniuses back to the Clairecords label with open arms.

"After Summer" is produced by legendary Glaswegian Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub, BMX Bandits, The Pastels etc). Pia Fraus and Norman Blake kept file transfer programs busy for months to exchange soundfiles; this relationship has created something magical. "After Summer" is the 4th proper album from the Pias, and quite possibly their best album to date. No wonder, if your idol takes producer's chair! The album also features some guest musicians: Estonian electronica stars Galaktlan and Pastacas guest on two of the album's tracks. Moreover, "After Summer" has the well-known and well-loved Pia Fraus sound, quality songwriting, a lot of studio tricks and layers of guitars, synths, and boy/girl vocals. This album will bring huge grins to the mouths of Pia Fraus fans, yet at the same time it is a perfect introduction to Pia Fraus for the uninitiated.

For fans of My Bloody Valentine, Stereolab, Chicago Underground Quartet, The Pastels, The Beatles, and – of course - Pia Fraus!...www.tonevendor.com
