In his most intimate and forceful recording in years Robin Rimbaudaka Scanner maneuvers across fresh terrain that embraces thetraditional - guitar, vocals and string arrangements, and the moreeclectic – hundreds of found voices, radar transmissions andenvironmental recordings.Opening the album with Sans Soleil, featuring Michael Gira(Swans, Angels of Light) on guitar, Scanner sings for the first timeon his album, his voice hovering through a barren landscape offragile loops and harmonies. Crisp distressed melodies withcrushingly fat beats unite in Pietas Ilulia to map a cinematiclandscape populated by N.E.R.D by way of Robert Fripp and JohnBarry.Anna Livia Plurabelle paints an achingly melancholic picturethrough which celebrated Mumbai born soprano Patricia Rozariosoars and flies with a radiant timbre. Having effectively been themuse for British composer John Taverner for some years, Rozariobrings a dexterity and humane conviction to this electronicsoundscape. The ghostly presence of William Burroughs andphilosopher Bertrand Russell weave their way through some of thepieces, opening into the dark heart of Yellow Plains Under WhiteHot Blue Sky, an epic, almost menacing work, with corrosivevoices, noises and abstract shapes over a primordial electronic beat, that continues to build and ignite with bowed strings into apicturesque precise explosion. The Last European casts phonetic Croatian and Korean into arhythmic bed of pulses and instrumental melodies, tripping throughitchy rhythms that entangle themselves upon one another, whilst AClearing Between Earth and Air closes the album with a highlyorganic and textured mix of voices, drifting harmonies andKrautrock pulses, breeding a drifting melancholy from the union ofvoice and electronic and acoustic instrumentation.By far his most mature and personally sombre album, Rockets is inequal parts sumptuous and achingly beautiful, sentimental andexploratory. Jean Baudrillard once depicted paradise as mournful, afitting location for this ravishing soundtrack...wwww.binemusic.de
